HOW TO ROLLBACK FROM WINDOWS 10 TECHNICAL PREVIEW TO WINDOWS 8 1 FOR PHONES

It has been a day since Windows 10 Preview for phone was released for many devices after a wait and youve probably realized that it is far from being finished. While you had fun checking out the Preview, you want to go back to a more stable build. If you want to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft has made it really simple. Youll need a computer, your phone, a USB cable, and the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. make sure that your computer and phone are charged. Are you ready? Continue reading for the next steps.

Rollback

1.Download and install the Windows Phone Recovery Tool to your computer.

2.Open the Windows Phone Recovery Tool and connect the phone to your computer with the USB cable. If your phone is not automatically detected, disconnect it from your computer and press My phone was not detected at the bottom and follow the instructions on the screen.

3.If the phone is detected, tap the phone model on the screen to continue.

4.The next screen shows software versions. Tap the reinstall button at the bottom

5.Theres a disclaimer that suggests to backup your phone. Tap continue at the bottom.

6.The recovery tool downloads and installs the firmware. This may take a while depending on your network connection. The installation files are about 1.7 GB. Make sure not to disconnect the cable.

7.If all goes well, you get a message that says, "Operation successfully completed."
Thats it! You should now be back on Windows Phone 8.1. Well let you know if a new build for Windows 10 Preview for phone shows up.

How to Get the Old Thin Taskbar Buttons with Text in Windows 7

Here are the steps

1. Right-click on Taskbar and select Properties.

2. Now enable "Use small icons" option.

3. Youll also see that "Taskbar buttons" option would be set to "Always combine, hide labels". Change it to either "Combine when taskbar is full" or "Never combine".

"Combine when taskbar is full" option will group same program buttons in taskbar like Windows XP and Vista. "Never combine" option will disable grouping.

4. Thats it. Apply the changes and you can enjoy the same old thin taskbar with program text in Windows 7.

How to Add Aero ON OFF Shortcuts in Desktop and My Computer Context Menu in Windows Vista and 7

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, whenever you want to turn Aero process ON or OFF to enable or disable Aero glass effect, you have to do it either from Desktop Properties or from System properties. But did you know there is a very easy shortcut to do it within seconds?

Here are 2 commands to turn Aero ON / OFF which are used by Windows Vista and 7:

Command to Turn Aero ON: Rundll32 dwmApi #102
Alternative command to Turn Aero ON: sc start uxsms

Command to Turn Aero OFF: Rundll32 dwmApi #104
Alternative command to Turn Aero OFF: sc stop uxsms

You can give the commands in RUN dialog box or Start Menu Searchbox. You can also create their shortcuts on Desktop or Quick Launch or wherever you want. It can become quite handy in lots of situations like a software has disabled Aero because it was not compatible with Aero or if you are running out of battery in your laptop, etc.

You can also add these commands in Desktop context menu or My Computer context menu. e.g. when youll right-click on Desktop or My Computer icon, youll find the shortcuts of "Aero ON" and "Aero OFF" there.

Following is a step-by-step tutorial to Add "Aero ON" and "Aero OFF" options in Desktop and My Computer Context Menu:

Add "Aero ON" and "Aero OFF" in Desktop Context Menu:

1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshell

2. Right-click on the "Shell" key and select "New -> Key".

3. Give it name Aero ON.

4. Now create another key under "Aero ON" with the name "command" and in right-side pane set value of "Default" to:

Rundll32 dwmApi #102

If the above command doesnt work for you, you can use following command as value:

sc start uxsms

5. Now repeat steps 2-4 to add "Aero OFF" option, i.e. Right-click on the "Shell" key and select"New -> Key".

6. Give it name Aero OFF.

7. Now create another key under "Aero OFF" with the name "command" and in right-side pane set value of "Default" to:

Rundll32 dwmApi #104

If the above command doesnt work for you, you can use following command as value:

sc stop uxsms

8. Thats it. Now youll get both "Aero ON" and "Aero OFF" options in Desktop Context Menu.

If the above command doesnt work for you, you can use following command as value:

sc start uxsms

5. Now repeat steps 2-4 to add "Aero OFF" option, i.e. Right-click on the "Shell" key and select"New -> Key".

6. Give it name Aero OFF.

7. Now create another key under "Aero OFF" with the name "command" and in right-side pane set value of "Default" to:

Rundll32 dwmApi #104

If the above command doesnt work for you, you can use following command as value:

sc stop uxsms

8. Thats it. Now youll get both "Aero ON" and "Aero OFF" options in My Computer Context Menu.

NOTE: There is also another similar command "Rundll32 dwmApi #105" which is used to run "Flip 3D". You can also add it in My Computer or desktop Context Menu by following the above mentioned steps.

Upload to YouTube is a great (and the only) app in the Windows Phone Store which can upload videos to YouTube directly. Install Upload to YouTube from the Windows Phone Store(LINK).
Open it and tap on the Pick Video icon.
Browse through your albums and pick the video file that you want to upload.
Enter a Title and Description for the video. You can also select the category, tags and the visibility of the video.
When done, tap on the Upload Icon (3rd icon) and provide access to the app.
The video will start uploading.
You will receive a notification when the upload finishes.

Once the upload begins, you can keep tracking the status in real time or lock your phone’s screen or else minimize the app and work with some other app. The upload will continue in the background.

Note : If the Video is stored outside of Camera Roll or Pictures folder.

If the video that you want to upload is not in the Camera Roll or the Pictures folder, you can use the File Manager to browse to the video. Long tap on the Video and choose Share> Upload to YouTube.

Open YouTube.com/upload

Get “Hide Window When Minimized” Option Back in Windows Live Mail in Windows 7

When I installed Windows Live Mail in Windows 7, I found that "Hide window when minimized" option was missing in Windows Live Mail system tray context menu.

Its one of the most essential option. It allows you to minimize the Windows Live Mail window to system tray instead of taskbar. But its not shown in Windows 7 because of some compatibility issues.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial to get the "Hide window when minimized" option back in Windows Live Mail:

1. Right-click on the Windows Live Mail shortcut and select Properties. Here the shortcut might be present on Desktop, Programs menu or anywhere else.

2. Go to "Compatibility" tab and enable "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" option.

3. Select "Windows Vista" from the drop-down list and Apply it.

4. Thats it. Now start Windows Live Mail and youll get the option back in its system tray context menu:

1. Type regedit in RUN or Start Menu search box and press Enter. Itll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

3. Now in right-side pane, change value of OEMBackground to 1

4. Now go to following folder:

%windir%System32oobe

Here %windir% represents "Windows" folder present in the system drive where Windows 7 is installed.

5. Create a new folder "info" inside oobe folder. Then again create a new folder "backgrounds" inside info folder. So the final path would be:

%windir%System32oobeinfo ackgrounds

6. Now copy any desired wallpaper to this new "backgrounds" folder but following conditions must be followed:

The image name must be backgroundDefault

The image format must be JPG

The image size must be less than 256 KB

Thats it. copy the wallpaper to "backgrounds" folder, your Windows 7 login screen will start using this new wallpaper as background

Fully featured GMail now available on Windows Phone 8 1 Update 1 IE

An official app isnt yet released for Windows Phone for Gmail yet (third party apps like MetroMail do a wonderful job nevertheless), and Google didnt bat an eye towards Windows Phone. As one can see from the screenshots below, a circular icon will be present, which will animate when calculating or speaking to the Windows Phone owner. Not quite the Halo experience some were praying for, but keeping in line with the simplicity of Windows Phone, its all about the functionality when it comes to virtual asistants.

Cortana Settings

Much like Siri on iOS, Cortana is able to address users by name or nicknames like "Master Chief" from Halo. The assistant will also be able to store information in a notebook system, allowing for quick access to location data, behaviours, personal details, reminders and contact information. Notifications can also be generated through flight tracking and other mentions in email conversations.

In short: Cortana will be more than a mere command and search assistant. Bing will join Foursquare and other services as sources of information, and Cortana will learn and adapt to individuals, offering a more personalised experience. We expect to see more about Cortana in the run up to Build 2014, where Windows Phone 8.1 is likely to be announced.
