Intel Next Unit of Computing

Intel Next Unit of Computing

If Intel used better marketing for what they are calling Intel NUC (Intel Next Unit of Computing) they would have a lot a lot of sales. Most people seeking for intro computer kits know about the Arduino , the Raspberry Pi and similar projects. And most ignore the Intel NUC. My sample is mostly of technology early adopters with the discretionary buying power to purchase Surface Pros, Xbox Ones, PS4s and Teslas!

A 4th generation i3 version of the Intel NUC (~U$300.00) with 8GB RAM (~U$75.00) and a 128GB mSATA drive (~U$100.00) would cost under U$500.00. Microsoft is definitely not helping this market for computers that would be perfectly fit for experiments and specific functional applications. For example, controlling WebCams. The Microsoft Research HomeOS would be a perfect fit for such hardware. Yet, if one has to buy a full copy of Windows at a cost near ~U$200.00 that becomes a huge obstacle in the low end, combined with the marketing obstacle at the high-end. Soon kids will be connecting iPads to home automation kits at the high-end, and an entire generation will ignore what “Wintel” once meant…
